Thanks to Writer/Director Michael Turner and the talented folks at Ill-Co. Productions, I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to get a sneak-peek at the upcoming horror-short, Dead Creek. As it will surely hit the Short Film Festivals very soon, Dead Creek is a prime example of just how much can be done with a limited budget and a keen eye for detail.
Inspired by the scenic Dead Creek in Addison, Vermont, Director Turner (Primevil) says that the story for the short film was greatly inspired by his having lived in the wooded creek area. Mr. Turner's vision of being lost in this swampy, remote location really comes through on-screen; making the muddy swamp a beautiful and dangerous main character for the movie. The misty, eerie location sets the scene for a nice short film.
Dead Creek tells the story of two sisters, Jess (Kerrin Jeromin) and Erin (Taryn Hough); having spent the day hiking through the back woods and taking photos; they soon realize that they must get back to civilization by sun-down. Forced to cross a muddy marsh, they will come face to face with the terrible tragedy that took place there so many years ago. As dusk approaches, they are haunted by ghosts of their past and the evil that lurks along the muddy banks of Dead Creek.
While I enjoyed watching Dead Creek, I couldn't help but wish for more of it. I do believe that this 16 minute short film would have made for a fine full-length horror film. But, as that is not the case here, I have to respect the filmmakers for managing to get so many beautifully filmed shots and palpable tension into such a short film.
Though the filmmakers have not yet announced a premier date, keep you eye out for Dead Creek on our Ominous Events page for all of the upcoming Film Festivals in your area; it is a creepy horror short well worth seeing!
