From Writers/Directors Peter Scheere and Michael Roesh, and the team that brought us movies like 30 Days of Night and The Grudge, comes 88 minutes of a surprisingly interesting vampire movie. Though decidedly low-budget, with its cheesy sets and marginally experienced supporting cast, Brotherhood of Blood has a story line that keeps you watching...
The movie premise is simple enough: a rag-tag team of vampire hunters, led by Carrie (Victoria Pratt), must ready their rifles and sharpened their stakes for a mission, deep inside the the vampires' lair. The fanged enemies have kidnapped a human and they are torturing this poor guy in order to learn the whereabouts of his brother.
Why, you ask? Seems that a powerful and ancient vampire wants to return to the world and needs the brothers to do so. But, turns out, the vampires want his return even less than the humans do. The story gets more interesting as we learn the vampire's violent history and find that the humans and vampires will have to work together to defeat the coming evil.
I have to admit that I was ill-prepared for how good this story was going to be. For the first fifteen minutes of the movie, I had to sit on my hands to keep them from hitting 'eject' on my trusty remote control. Determined to get through it, I kept watching...
Just when I thought it couldn't get worse, the movie got interesting; my earlier thoughts of returning it to Blockbuster with a scowl were lost as I really got into the story. The movie jumps around a little, covering various moments of the last week. It can be distracting, these flashbacks, but you learn more as it goes along.
It was fun to see horror icons, Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead) and
Sid Haig (The Devil's Rejects) together again. In the Special Features on this disc, there are interesting interviews with them. Seems they both really enjoyed doing this movie and have some funny comments about the project.
While not the best vampire movie to cross my path, Brotherhood of Blood packs an interesting story and is well worth a rental.
Overall Rating: 2 1/2
