"This is the kind of party that changes your life." - Carolyn (Alecia Moore)
From the producers of Saw, comes the 90 minute, heart-pounding and frightening horror-thriller, Catacombs. Though it may be another 'Cute-Chick-Survives-Nightmare" movie, this one ends with a surprising twist that you never see coming!
The movie begins with Victoria (Shannyn Sossamon, One Missed Call) as she joins her sister, Carolyn (Alecia Moore - aka: Pink) in the romantic city of Paris. There is little time to enjoy the sights as there is an underground party to go to! Literally.
One hundred feet below the City of Lights lies a 200 mile labyrinth of dank, limestone tunnels. Centuries ago, when the cemeteries began to overflow, the city dug up some 7 million dead and put their remains in the underground catacombs. This unlikely party site draws young people from far and wide for the dark excitement and halls full of exposed skulls and bones.
Arriving at the wild party, Victoria suffers a panic attack when trapped with the pulsing music and hundreds of people pressed into the dark tunneled rooms. Wanting to go home, Victoria soon wanders away from the throng of drunken party-goers and finds herself lost and hunted in the maze. After seeing her sister murdered, Victoria has to find a way to the streets above, before a murderous mad-man gets her, too.
Though the story line is a bit weak, the filmmakers more than make up for it with action and frightening visual images. Well directed by Tomm Coker and David Elliot, many of the movie's scenes are filmed with a strobe-like effect, adding to the characters' disorientation and fear. This emotion is contagious for the viewer and you are pulled into this frightening underground world as Victoria tries to stay alive. It is definitely one of those movie situations that you pray never to be in...especially if you're claustrophobic!
All in all, the Catacombs makes for a very hip and scary flick!
Recommended as a rental and/or purchase.
